Aramid Fiber Mesh as Reinforcement of Concrete Panels Subjected to High Strain Rates

چکیده

Because of their high strength and energy dissipation capacity, aramid fibers are used widely as the material of choice for body armor and similar applications. Their use as reinforcement of concrete panels, whether prestressed or not, poses significant challenges because of their relatively low fiber-to-fiber friction coefficient and limited bond strength between fibers and cementitious matrix, as well as chemical incompatibility between aramid fibers and cement matrix. This paper explores the mechanisms by which more or less brittle materials embedded in body armor systems are capable of dissipating large amounts of energy, thereby preventing the penetration by armor-piercing projectiles and to determine whether such mechanisms can be reproduced with cement-composite thin sheets reinforced with similar aramid fiber mesh. A brief survey of the mathematical models available to describe such mechanisms will help determine to what extent such technology transfer is feasible.

A Sample of International Production FRP Reinforcement for Concrete Structures

fi ber reinforced plastic (FRP) re. nforcement is one of the most promising new developments for concrete structures. FRP reinforcing elements provide lighter, easier to assemble, and more durable structures that are free of the deterioration caused by corrosion of steel. FRPs consist of synthetic or organic highstrength fibers, most of which are impregnated with a resin matrix. They are availa...

Enhancing Performance of Infill Masonry With Skin reinforcement Subjected To Cyclic Load

Masonry infill has been widely used as building material due to its cost effectiveness and availability.  The failure of these masonry infill walls during the past earthquakes have underscored the importance of ensuring the safety of the infill walls when it is subjected to lateral loads. In-plane and out of plane failures have been observed in many reinforced concrete framed building with maso...

Seismic Behavior of Substandard RC Columns Retrofitted with Embedded Aramid Fiber Reinforced Polymer (AFRP) Reinforcement

Many existing reinforced concrete structures were constructed with substandard characteristics. Low quality concrete, poor transverse reinforcement details and insufficient flexural strength are among the most common deficiencies. While substandard structures are in need of retrofitting, particularly in seismic areas, problems such as high costs and disturbance to occupants are major obstacles ...

Glass Concrete Thin Sheets Prestressed with Aramid Fiber Mesh

Concrete has been prestressed traditionally with high-strength steel. The vulnerability of such material to corrosion calls for alternate materials, if thin-sheet products are to be prestressed. A research project at Columbia University is investigating the feasibility of using aramid fiber mesh for such purpose. This paper explores the chemical and mechanical properties of aramid in the form o...

Anchorages For FRP

C ommercially available fiberbased reinforcement for concrete is made of carbon, aramid, or glass filament fibers impregnated in a resin. Some aramid fiber reinforcement consists of aramid filaments without a resin matrix. For general applications, the most important feature of fiber-based reinforcement is its resistance to corrosion, which makes it ideal for reinforcing concrete exposed to hig...
